Week 4: My Favorite Color is Yellow Jeep

IMG_0987
You are my funshine, my only funshine.
On a sunny, 70 degree day, there’s  nothing better than unsnapping the two black levers that release my sunshine yellow Jeep’s cloth top. In about two minutes flat, the top is down, my Maui Jim shades  are on, and I’m putting the pedal to the metal to  soak up the world. Meghan Trainor or Pharell Williams   gives   me an open air concert as I navigate one of the Loudoun’s signature, pot-hole-dappled, gravel backroads.
The license plate, the creation of my daughter, Cady, says it all: Funshne. Whenever I’m behind the steering wheel of my instantly convertible Funshne, life is good. The breeze threads my hair. The sun toasts   my face. There are no bad days–or nights–in the driver’s seat of my Jeep Wrangler. The sweet serenade of spring peepers, the twinkling dance  of a thousand lightning bugs, and the perfectness of a full moon are   all the more stunning when viewed from a topless Jeep.
A few weeks back, I had one of the best drives home from work…potholes, flooded roadways, overflowing ditches that became fast-running streams. While other cars struggled to straddle the potholes and slowed to a snail’s pace to circumvent the six  inches of water that covered the road, I reveled in every bump. I swerved into the stream and hooted and hollered as  waves of water washed over the hood of Funshne. When I burst through the door at home, I announced, “I just had the most fun drive home ever!” My husband smiled and said, “You came home on Shreve Mill, didn’t you?” Why yes, like-minded  husband of mine, I did.
This summer, we’ll head to Corolla, North Carolina and take Funshne four-wheeling, dipping our Bridgestone tires in the Atlantic Ocean, drawing zigzag paths in the sand, and roaring hysterically  as we celebrate life in our favorite, top-down yellow Jeep.

Top 10 Things That Make Me Smile

What makes you smile? You probably have hundreds of things that make you smile, from watching goofy kitten videos on YouTube to digging into a triple-scoop serving of Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream.

To celebrate life’s joys, this week’s class blogging assignment is to generate a Top 10 List of Things That Make You Smile. Once you’ve created your list, insert a link to a song that makes you happy when you hear it. You’re welcome to add a photo or embed a video, too. As always, I ask that you keep it middle-school appropriate.

Mrs. Rombach’s Top 10 List of Smile Starters

1. Christmas morning –the huddle at the top of the stairs, the tumble of descending footsteps, Sean’s wild yelps, and the tornado of flying wrapping paper that ensues

2. A backroads, sunset drive in my top-down yellow Jeep Wrangler, music blaring (fall, spring, or summer)

3. The perfect cup of steaming hot coffee that my husband brews for me each morning–mmmmm

4. Stretching out on a patch of grass, sunshine warming my face, birds serenading me, and the march of marshmallow clouds to entertain me

5. Wandering around a craft or art show with my equally impassioned arts lover and dearest friend, Cathy

6. Enjoying an extraordinary, chef-prepared dinner with my husband–sharing our dishes (not doing them!)

7. Spending one-on-one time with each of my five children, being part of something they want to do or see

8. Experiencing the beauty of creation by traveling to new destinations — and exploring the surroundings by foot, bicycle, or boat (I’m afraid of heights, so hot air balloons are out!)

9. Teaching 70 uniquely awesome sixth graders who keep me passionate about my job, the best vocation in the world

10. Birthdays – the chance to celebrate my five kiddo’s birthdays and to make one full day all about them (which is hard to pull off the other 364 days a year)

I love music. I love to dance. I love to sing, although those around me don’t love for me to sing (seriously, my children would back me up on this one.)

One of my all-time favorite songs is Michael Jackson’s Thriller. I remember racing home from school to watch MTV’s world premiere of this groundbreaking video. In my freshman dorm at James Madison University (go Dukes!), my nearly life-size Michael Jackson poster faced off with my roommate’s David Lee Roth poster. Talk about dichotomies!

Music colors my life with happiness–and Michael Jackson certainly influenced my love of dance music. In fact, it was music that brought Mr. Rombach and me together. I wouldn’t leave the dance floor…so my very awkward dancer of a husband had to put on his dancing shoes to meet me. That’s true love. 🙂

Now, let me reintroduce Michael Jackson’s Thriller video. This song ALWAYS makes me happy! Warning: The video can be a little scary. Watch if you dare…

Now it’s your turn to make your Top 10 List of Things That Make You Smile–due by Friday at midnight. 🙂

I can’t wait to read your smile lists and listen to your happy tunes! 🙂
